BIENはドローイング（描画）の作品を制作するアーティストです。BIENのいびつな線のドローイングは、何かの「かたち」をなぞって描かれています。それは文字や記号から始まり、または漫画やアニメのキャラクター等、人の想像力によって生まれてきた様々な「かたち」です。そのような「かたち」をBIENの特徴あるタッチによって描き直すことによって、その「かたち」は曖昧になり、何かに見えるようで見えない不思議な線の集合体になります。そのようなドローイングは、何気なく筆を走らせた紙の上で、何か新しい「かたち」生まれて来るその瞬間を切り出してきているようであり、または絵の中に何かが在る予感や気配だけを抜き出して描いているようでもあります。今回の個展のタイトルである「WOOZY WIZARD」とは、日本語に直訳すると「だらしない魔法使い」です。このようなタイトルからは、昔から童話やアニメで観たとあるシーンを思い出します。それは未熟な魔法使いが何かを召還するけれど、魔法の能力が足りなくて、自分の望む物とは異なるものを出現させてしまうという内容です。それはある意味「完成していない」ことが成せる技であり、まさにありとあらゆる「かたち」を曖昧にしていくことで新しい何かを生み出そうとするBIENらしいタイトルです。そのようなBIENの試みを是非ともご高覧ください。
【ARTIST STATEMENT】
アスファルトのひび割れ、剥がれ落ちた壁、洞窟の中から見える光の輪郭、何気なく落ちたコードのうねり、木の上を虫が食い歩いた跡だったり。人知れず作られてしまったエラーみたいなかたちがそこらじゅうに転がっている。システムからはみでて生まれてしまった抽象的で非現実的なかたち。 この世界にはいくつもの真実があふれている。漫画やアニメだって同じようなものだと思った。 誰かがつくったキャラクターや文字や記号。見知った物のかたちから逸れて線をひいてみる。いつもの文字を書く線からは到底たどり着かない動きをしてみる。 するとそこには自然とかたち(のようなもの)があって、新たなエラーが生まれていた。 Abracadabra!

BIEN is an artist who makes drawings. BIEN’s drawings with a little awkward lines trace a certain kind of shapes. Some shapes are generated from letters and signs and others born out of imaginings such as characters of manga and animation. These shapes become vague as BIEN draws again with his unique touch. The vague figure becomes a group of lines that seem weird because you would feel you are looking at something, but you actually are not. It is as if the moment of birth of something new was cut out of the paper, on which BIEN draws casually with a brush. Or, as if BIEN extracted only the presence and sign of something. Title of this exhibition is WOOZY WIZARD, which reminds us of scenes from fairy tales or animation we read or saw when we were children. The story is: an immature wizard tries to let something appear, but it ends up something that is not desired, because his skill was not sufficient Such incident happens because his skill is “not perfect”. This title represents the style of BIEN who creates something new by making shapes vague. Please enjoy what BIEN is experimenting.
【Artist Statement】
Cracked asphalt, fallen walls, contour of light seen from a cave, curve of a cord that was fallen out of nowhere, and trace of an insect walking on the wood. There are so many shapes that seem to be errors everywhere. They were generated without being seen. Shapes that are abstract and unrealistic: they go beyond the “system”. The world is full of truth. I thought this idea applies to manga and animation. Characters, letters, and signs invented by somebody. I try to draw a line being separated from the shapes of familiar things, and move it in a way that cannot be done with the lines making up ordinary letters. Then something (like) a shape automatically appeared. It was a new kind of error. Abracadabra!
BIEN
Born in Tokyo in 1993. BIEN creates works by making drawing works. He has been inspired by street culture, animation, and figurines. BIEN paints abstract paintings, inheriting various ways of expressing that represents these cultures.
